11 Tips For a Smooth Move
Are you reading this because you’re relocating or thinking about a move? Whatever brought you to the Flats at Spring Mill Station, we’re glad you’re here, and we’re ready to help! Here are some tips from us to get you into your new home as easily as possible.
#1 Crowdsource
Look for top-rated companies according to Google reviews, the Better Business Bureau, and recommendations from friends and neighbors. Don’t be afraid to ask moving companies for references!
#2 Ask What’s Included
Ask your prospective moving company if they can accommodate local, long-distance, and large furniture moves and if they also provide packing services. Some companies offer furniture wrapping and cleaning services at an additional cost.
#3 Estimate Costs Beforehand
Many moving companies offer time-saving estimate calculators on their websites so you have a ballpark figure for how much you’ll be spending. Be sure to ask about specific fees or add-ons that aren’t included in your base estimate.
#4 Trust your gut
If you have trouble reaching a moving company, or getting a timely response, this may be an indication that they are overwhelmed, understaffed, and might not be able to handle your move in the time frame you want.
#5 Pack Essentials Separately
Pack an overnight bag containing all your essentials. The last thing you want to do when you arrive at your new place is to dig through multiple boxes for your toothbrush! Also, consider packing a clear crate with everything you need first. This could include important documents, receipts, keys, electronics, and chargers.
#6 Bag Clothes on Hangers
The easiest and fastest way to pack hanging clothes is to place them in a garbage bag and tie them shut while still hanging. Then simply hang them up in your new closet and unwrap them. They’ll stay clean and organized, and best of all, you won’t have to spend hours rehanging all of your clothes!
#7 Purge!
Don’t bother packing items that have been stored in a closet unused for a year or longer. Make piles to donate, discard, or list for sale, and make plans for them to be removed from your old home a couple of weeks prior to your move to avoid last-minute headaches.
#8 Don’t Buy Boxes!
Use laundry baskets, trash bins, and suitcases as moving boxes, and ask local department and appliance stores for their gently-used boxes. Using your own clothing as packing material can help avoid the expense of bubble wrap. Socks make great bags for your stemware!
#9 Make a Timeline
Plan your move from 8-10 weeks out, all the way up to moving day. If you’re going to need storage before you can move into your new place, ask your movers if they provide secure storage. Keep in mind that you may need to coordinate cable, internet, and phone installation and may need to book an appointment several weeks in advance.
#10 Label, Number, and Color-Code
Labeling your boxes will help both you and your movers determine what goes where. Numbering them will ensure that if a box does go missing, you know which one it is. Don’t forget to assess storage space in your new home ahead of time, including cabinets and shelving. The ample closet, cabinet, and pantry space here at the Flats at Spring Mill Station means you won’t be struggling to find storage in your new apartment.
